# Payout Methods and Withdrawing From Your Wallet

> Set up your payout method (beneficiary), understand your wallet balances, and withdraw funds with a clear fee and exchange-rate preview.

If your payouts land in a **wallet**, you first tell us where to send the money by setting up a payout method (also called a beneficiary), then withdraw from your wallet whenever you like.

<Info>
  Adding a payout account is **not** part of the onboarding wizard. Onboarding is four steps: **Terms of Service**, **Identity verification**, **Identity & tax details**, and **Documents**. You add your payout method afterwards, from the **Wallet** card on your [contractor dashboard](/contractors/contractor-dashboard).
</Info>

## Setting up your payout method

The payout methods you can choose from are the ones available in your country, which is resolved automatically from your account. Only methods that are currently active are shown.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Pick a payout method">
    Pick a **payout method**. Common types include a bank transfer, **ACH** (US bank), **SWIFT**, mobile money, and a proxy method.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick a currency">
    Pick a **currency** (a three-letter ISO code such as USD) when the method offers more than one.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Fill in the fields for that method">
    Fill in the fields for that method. The exact fields are driven by the method you chose. For example, an ACH account asks for the bank name, account name, routing number, account number, and account type. Some fields are choices you pick from a dropdown, and some are grouped together (for example an address, a phone number, or a beneficiary id).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the account holder name">
    Type the **account holder name**. This field starts empty, so enter the name exactly as it appears on the receiving account.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the payout account">
    Choose **Save payout account**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If no payout methods are available for your country yet, you'll see a message asking you to contact support.

<Info>
  A saved payout method is required before you can withdraw from your wallet.
</Info>

## Your wallet balances

Your wallet holds a **separate balance for each currency** you're paid in. Each shows the amount **available** to withdraw now, plus any amount still **processing** (settling and not yet available). A brand-new wallet may show no balances until it's first used.

Balances are **never added together**. A EUR balance and a USD balance stay two separate amounts, and there is no combined wallet total.

<Note>
  You only need **one** payout account. The same saved account receives every currency balance, so you do not need a EUR account to be paid a EUR balance. Where your balance currency and your account's currency differ, we convert the withdrawal and show you the rate before you confirm.
</Note>

## Withdrawing

You withdraw each currency balance on its own, and each withdrawal carries its own fee and its own exchange rate. To move money out, enter an amount and review a preview before confirming. The preview lays out the whole transfer:

| Line          | What it means                                                                                                     |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| You withdraw | The amount leaving your wallet. |
| Fee           | The withdrawal fee.                                                                                               |
| Exchange rate | The rate from your wallet currency to your payout currency. This row appears only when the two currencies differ. |
| They receive | The amount your payout account is estimated to receive. |

The preview **moves no money**: it's just a summary. The withdrawal only happens when you confirm it.

If we can't price the withdrawal, it stops with a message rather than going ahead on a guessed rate:

| Message                                                                         | What it means                                                                                                    |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Could not read your bank account details, please try again | Your saved payout account couldn't be read just now. Try again in a moment. |
| Could not determine your bank account currency, please re-add your bank account | Your saved payout account is missing the currency we need. Remove it and add it again. |
| Could not get an exchange rate right now, please try again | A live rate for converting your balance to your payout currency couldn't be fetched. Nothing has been withdrawn. |

<Info>
  A withdrawal is rejected unless you have **both** an approved identity verification **and** a saved payout method. See [Verifying your identity](/contractors/verify-your-identity).
