# Verifying Your Identity (ID Scan & Selfie)

> Verify your identity with a quick ID scan and selfie, follow the status on your computer, and understand how identity and address checks affect getting paid.

Before you can raise invoices and receive payouts, you verify your identity with a quick ID scan and a short selfie. It takes about two minutes. You do this during onboarding, and you can re-run it any time from your dashboard.

## What you'll need

* A valid **government photo ID:** a passport, national ID, or driver's license.
* **Good lighting.**
* **Your face** for a quick liveness check.

## How it works

There are two steps:

1. **Scan the front of your ID.** Only the front is captured.
2. **Take a short selfie** so we can confirm it's really you.

## The capture happens on your phone

The camera capture always runs on a phone, even when you start on a computer.

* **On a computer:** you see a **QR code** and a link to the mobile page, with a **Copy link** button. Scan the code with your phone (or copy the link and open it there) to run the capture. Your computer keeps a live status card up to date as you go. If you open the mobile page on a computer by mistake, it says **Continue on your phone**.
* **On a phone:** the capture runs right there.

<Note>
  The camera needs a secure context (HTTPS, or localhost during local testing). Over a plain network address without HTTPS, the camera will not start.
</Note>

</Steps>

## Following the status

On your computer, a live **Status** card updates on its own while the check runs:

| Status      | What it means                                                                                         |
| ----------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Waiting | Waiting for you to scan the QR code with your phone. |
| In progress | Your phone is connected. Follow the steps on your phone. |
| Checking | We are checking your identity. This takes a few seconds. |
| Verified | Your identity is verified. You can continue. |
| Failed | We couldn't verify your identity from what was submitted. You may be asked to try again. |
| In review | Your verification needs a quick manual review. You can keep going, and our team will confirm shortly. |
| Expired | The session expired. Use **Start again** to get a fresh QR code. |

When the check succeeds, you return to your dashboard. If a session expires, click **Start again** for a fresh QR code. If you land on **In review**, that just means a quick manual review is happening, and you can keep setting up your account in the meantime.

## How verification affects getting paid

Your **identity** and your **address** are checked separately, and each moves through its own set of statuses:

| Status      | What it means                                              |
| ----------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| Not started | The check hasn't run yet. |
| Processing | The check is underway. This can take 1 to 2 business days. |
| Approved    | The check passed.                                          |
| Rejected    | The check didn't pass. A plain-language reason is shown.   |

**Only an approved identity check is required to get paid.** A rejected **address** does not block your payouts, though you may be asked to update your address from the **Your details** section of your dashboard. If your identity check is rejected, you'll see the reason and a prompt to re-verify.

## Keeping your verification current

An approved identity does not last forever. As its expiry approaches, your dashboard walks you through it:

* **About to expire:** a gentle reminder to re-verify soon so your payouts aren't interrupted. When the date is known, it's shown.
* **In a grace period:** your ID has expired and you're in a short grace period. Re-verify to keep getting paid.
* **Expired:** re-verify your ID to keep getting paid.

To re-verify at any time, open the re-verification flow from your dashboard and run the same quick ID scan and selfie again.
